Why Financial Therapy?

Why work with a clinician who focuses on Financial Therapy?

Identify money beliefs. Financial Therapy allows clinicians to work with individuals and couples to identify the beliefs, assumptions and stories each holds around the saving, consuming and meaning of money’s presence or absence in one’s life.

Couples often struggle discussing and making financial goals and decisions. Couples in long-term relationships have disagreements 40% of the time centered on finances (Meyer & Sledge, 2022). The “we don’t talk about money” theme can be reinforced culturally, within our family of origin and in our everyday interactions. Even clinicians can struggle to discuss money issues in sessions if they are not tuned into their own money beliefs!

Misaligned financial beliefs can hurt our relationships. Multiple studies show that arguments over finances—even when couples are financially stable—can negatively impact the longevity and perceived quality of the relationship (Peetz & Meloff, 2023). Learning how to discuss the misalignments here can further improve other hard discussions on other topics like sex and intimacy.

Our Healing Therapy trains each therapist to work with money issues. Contact us today to begin this journey. Please note we are not Financial Advisors or Financial Planners, but we can refer you to specialists in those fields.
