Today My Body is Different

I had a yoga instructor who liked to calmly declare in every class, “You have never been as old as you are today. What is possible today, with this body?” I used to really hate hearing it—how dare you call me old!  As with many things, over time—as I have aged—I have come to view this phrase differently. I see it as a way to check in with myself—emotionally, physically, and mentally—what is happening now? Our bodies change physically over time: chronic physical and mental diagnoses, injuries, hormone fluctuations, medications and treatments all impact what is possible in our one body today and right now. Noticing the change may stoke determination to regain strength or agility. It might cause grief knowing we won’t be able to do a task with the same energy or passion, or we may have to do it less often requiring a longer recovery period, or ever again.

There can be a beauty in looking for what is possible today. What brings us pleasure may change, but there can be excitement in discovering how what can feel pleasurable today, right now. An increase or decrease in the sensitivity to touch or taste or hearing can open a new range of options. It can make us more attentive moment-to-moment. We might take more in a new moment than we might otherwise.

Where is my capacity or energy or focus for the day?

  • What can I savor in my activity?
  • What can I build if not my muscles?
  • Who can I connect with?
  • Where can I go to stimulate my curiosity?
